City of Salina to Host Public Meeting on
Smoky Hill River Renewal Project

SALINA, KANSAS - The City, with the help of HDR, will be working to refine design elements presented in the Smoky Hill River Renewal Master Plan that was adopted in 2010. In May 2016, voters approved a sales tax increase from 8.40% to 8.75% that will be in place over 20 years. A portion of these sales tax funds will be used for Smoky Hill River Renewal projects and will allow restoration efforts to move forward. As part of this process, the City will host a public meeting to provide an overview of master plan elements and gather input and comments on proposed improvements:

Thursday, June 22, 2017
4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Open House
5:30 p.m. Presentation
Tony’s Pizza Event Center – Heritage Hall
800 The Midway
Salina, Kansas 67401

Attendees may come and go at any time to view exhibits, speak with project representatives, and provide feedback on proposed elements. A formal presentation, lasting approximately 30 minutes, will begin at 5:30 p.m. A survey will also be available at the meeting and online at www.salina-ks.gov/riverrenewal from June 22 through July 7.

As part of the process, a Steering Committee will be formed that will work closely with City Staff and HDR. Interested citizens may complete a brief application and commit to nine Steering Committee and three Public Meetings. The City will select approximately 20 citizens to serve on the committee that reflect a wide range of community interests. Applications will be available at the public meeting and can be found on the City’s website www.salina-ks.gov/riverrenewal.

The public is invited to provide input and comments at any stage during project development. However, feedback is most useful now – before design decisions are made. Public meetings are scheduled to occur in June, July and September 2017. Following these meetings, the project team will advance desired concepts into preliminary designs. This process is expected to take just over one year. Following preliminary design, an additional public meeting will be held in the fall of 2018, prior to finalizing designs.

Specific questions regarding the project should be directed to Martha Tasker, Director of Utilities, City of Salina, martha.tasker@salina.org, (785)309-5725.
